Vapor absorption machine or VAM can be fuel driven or hot water driven. It is used to absorb vapour as the name suggests and is applicable in restaurants, hotels, offices, malls, colleges and schools, factories and certain industries. In case of fuel driven VAMs, there is no hot water or steam produced, it is directly fired.
They can be categorised into steam driven machine, fuel driven machine, hot water driven, exhaust type machines, ammonia type machines, super large type etc.
A steam driven type: This steam driven type can be found in two types such as single effect and double effect. Double effect occurs at two levels unlike a single effect in which there is only one generator. In case of double effect it involves both a primary generator and a secondary generator to achieve the vapour absorption.
Exhaust type: This makes use of waste heat in the form of engine exhaust. This also allows for direct cooling thus saves on air conditioning costs. It also minimises the initial capital cost and there are no additional power units needed.
Hot water type: These are used for industrial purpose, for cooling and air conditioning. This application of machines fired with hot water is seen in air cooling of gas turbines and DG.
